What You Can Expect From Recreo VR Content

Everything we create is designed with one purpose in mind: to improve the quality of life for people in care and healthcare settings.

From peaceful beaches and local landmarks to animal encounters and museum visits, every experience is carefully developed to be engaging, accessible, and meaningful for residents.

But to understand why our content is different, it's important to understand how Recreo VR began.

Why Recreo VR Was Created?

Founders Alex and Sam both had loved ones living in care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like so many families, they experienced the challenges that came with lockdowns, restrictions, and social isolation.

They witnessed firsthand how difficult those periods were for residents who were separated from family, friends, and the activities they enjoyed. They also saw the incredible work care staff were doing every day to support residents and keep spirits high despite enormous challenges.

In memory of Sam's Nana, Joyce, Recreo VR was founded with a clear purpose: to use immersive technology to improve the lives of people living in care settings. What began in Yorkshire has since grown across the UK and beyond, but that original mission remains exactly the same.

Designed Specifically for Care Settings

Many VR experiences available today were never designed for older adults or healthcare environments. They're often fast-paced, highly stimulating, and focused on excitement rather than wellbeing. At Recreo VR, we take the opposite approach.

Our experiences are designed specifically for care homes, hospitals, supported living services, and healthcare settings. That means every virtual experience is created with comfort, accessibility, and emotional wellbeing at its core.

Residents aren't being asked to navigate complicated menus or interact with challenging controls. Instead, they can sit back and enjoy immersive experiences that encourage exploration, conversation, reminiscence, and relaxation.

Whether someone is revisiting a place they once loved, discovering somewhere they've always wanted to visit, or simply enjoying a calming natural environment, the experience is designed to be positive, enjoyable, and easy to access.

VR Backed by Research

The growing use of virtual reality (VR) within healthcare is supported by an increasing body of research. Studies have demonstrated benefits, including:

  • Improved mood and well-being

  • Increased social interaction

  • Greater engagement in activities

  • Enhanced reminiscence opportunities

  • Reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation

  • Increased participation from individuals who may otherwise struggle to engage

For many residents, VR becomes much more than a visual experience. It becomes a conversation starter, a memory trigger, and a shared activity. A way to reconnect with places, interests, and experiences that may no longer be physically accessible. This is why we don't simply focus on creating impressive visuals. We focus on creating meaningful experiences.

Recreo VR Partnerships

One of the reasons our content continues to evolve is the relationships we've built across the health and social care sector. Over the years, we've been fortunate to work alongside organisations including the Alzheimer's Society, The National Trust, Cygnet, Barchester, and many more.

These partnerships help us understand what residents truly enjoy and what care teams need from activity programmes. By working closely with charities, healthcare providers, community organisations, and care professionals, we're able to create experiences that are both enjoyable and practical.

Why We Record Our Own VR Content?

One of the things that makes Recreo VR different is that we produce the majority of our content ourselves. This gives us complete control over every aspect of the experience. Rather than relying on generic third-party footage, we can carefully plan and record environments that are suitable for care settings from the very beginning.

Every scene is considered, every camera position is chosen deliberately, and every experience is designed to be comfortable, immersive, and easy to enjoy. Recording our own content means we can create experiences that feel natural and calming rather than overwhelming or overstimulating.

VR Content Residents Love

Over the years, we've learnt a lot about the types of experiences residents enjoy most. While everyone has different interests, certain themes consistently prove popular across care settings.

Animal Experiences

Animal content is one of the most requested categories we offer. Many residents have spent their lives around pets, farms, or nature, making these experiences highly engaging and emotionally meaningful.

We've recorded visits to:

  • Zoos

  • Farms

  • Wildlife attractions

  • The Deep aquarium

Animal experiences often generate conversation, storytelling, and fond memories, making them particularly effective for group sessions and reminiscence activities.

Beaches, Rivers and Local Scenery

Natural environments continue to be among our most popular experiences. For many residents, visiting a favourite beach, riverside location, countryside view, or local landmark can trigger powerful memories and conversations. The gentle pace of these experiences also makes them ideal for relaxation and emotional well-being.

Museums and Places of Interest

Cultural experiences allow residents to explore fascinating locations they may not otherwise be able to visit. One example is Hopetown Darlington Railway Museum, which has proven particularly popular with residents who have an interest in engineering, transport, or local history.

Content That Matters to Residents

Perhaps the biggest advantage of producing our own content is flexibility. Because we create experiences ourselves, we can respond to feedback from care homes and develop content that reflects residents' interests. If residents want to see more local scenery, we can explore opportunities to create it.

If a care home identifies a particular location or theme that would be meaningful to residents, we can work closely with them to understand what's possible. This collaborative approach helps ensure that our content remains relevant, engaging, and genuinely person-centred.

At Recreo VR, we don't see ourselves as a technology company that happens to work in care. We see ourselves as a care-focused organisation using technology to improve lives. Every experience we create is built around real people, real memories, and real moments of joy.
