Taking Flight in VR - John’s Spitfire Experience
Castor Lodge Care Home in Castor, Peterborough, collaborated with Recreo VR to create immersive VR experiences that enabled residents to virtually visit meaningful destinations, from local treasures like Burghley House and Peterborough Cathedral to distant places such as Spain, Edinburgh Zoo, and beaches around the world, without leaving the comfort of their home.
Key Highlights
Personalised and Accessible: Recreo VR’s creative team, including Alex Lancaster, captured 360° footage tailored to the residents’ interests and histories, ensuring each VR session felt relevant and engaging.
Encouraging Engagement & Conversation: Resident John Carr, who faces mobility challenges, described the experience as “absolutely amazing,” particularly moved by seeing Burghley House and familiar scenes from Spain, where his son lives.
Meaningful Emotional Connection: The immersive sessions offered not just visual stimulation but emotional resonance, bringing recognition, memory recall, and delight through familiar landmarks and landscapes.
Easy Integration into Everyday Care: Recreo VR emphasised their goal of seamless integration, aiming for VR to become a practical and enriching part of daily life in care settings.
This initiative demonstrates that virtual reality can enrich the lives of care home residents by offering tailored, emotionally resonant experiences, even for those with limited mobility.
When thoughtfully designed and delivered, VR can enhance mood, spark conversation, and bring joy, all while fitting smoothly into regular care routines.
